More possibilities in powerful static or dynamic tensile or compressive testing (DMTA)


Recently we have invested in more powerful equipment for static and dynamical testing of rubber products, reinforced materials, or plastics. 


A Schenck tensile tester, with a load-cell of 250kN, gives us the possibility to not only break fiber-reinforced rubber products (i.e. conveyor belts) or plastic parts, but also compress larger rubber products like fenders, compensators, bearings, blocks etc. Where a typical rubber tensile tester has a load-cell in the range of 1 to 10kN, this one is significantly more powerful.





To be not only able to have more possibilities in the static applications, we also extended our range of dynamical equipment with two DMTAs from Instron with load-cells up to 100kN. The DMTAs can test in compression, tension or shear. The frequency can be varied from 0.01 to 400 Hz, dependent on the dynamic amplitude. Our other DMTA is limited to 100Hz and 150N and is more accurate and suitable for smaller test pieces prepared from products. In the latest DMTAs the actual products themselves can be tested as such.


Rubber is a visco-elastic material, i.e. it shows both an elastic response and a viscous drag when deformed. These two phases of components seem to work against each other, the response of each phase after putting energy in it is exactly opposite. The ratio between the viscous part (loss modulus) and elastic part (storage modulus) is called the tan d. This visco-elastic behavior is frequency- and temperature dependent.


The DMTAs can for instance be used for:

· Single point measurements (e.g. tan d at 60°C, to simulate tire rolling resistance or the damping effect)

· Strain sweeps (Payne-effect,  to have an indication of the filler dispersion)

· Temperature sweeps (-150 to +300°C, to simulate various tire properties or low temperature behavior, Tg) 

· Frequency sweeps

· Static or dynamic strain-, force– or stress sweeps

· WLF-mastercurve determinations to predict life-time performance of rubber materials
