ERT BV extends their Chemical Analytical facilities with GC-MS, SEM-EDX and DSC


ERT BV has extended its chemical analytical lab by investing in a GC-MS, SEM-EDX and DSC.


Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is an analytical method that combines the features of gas-chromatography and mass spectrometry to identify different substances within a test sample. It shows which materials can be extracted. This might be of importance for instance for the Food and Pharmacopeia industry, but it can also show with which chemicals your samples have been in contact with. It is therefore a method often used in Failure Analysis or specific migration and extraction testing for the Food Industry (FDA, EC1935, BfR, Nederlandse Warenwet etc.).


SEM-EDX stands for Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) with Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analysis (EDX). This is a very accurate microscope combined with an x-ray technique used to identify the elemental composition of materials. The SEM-EDX can be used for instance for Reversed Engineering to find out which minerals are used as filler system in the rubber product or in case of trouble shooting to see which elements are present on the surface or in the rubber bulk. It shows any impurities your materials have been in contact with.


Differential scanning calorimetry, or DSC, is a thermo-analytical technique in which the difference in the amount of heat required to increase the temperature of a sample and reference is measured as a function of temperature. Differential scanning calorimetry can be used to measure a number of characteristic properties of a sample. Using this technique it is possible to observe fusion and crystallization events as well as glass transition temperatures Tg. DSC can also be used to study oxidation, as well as other chemical reactions. In the case of rubber it can also show whether a material is optimally cured.


Together with these latest investments we now have a fully operational Chemical Analytical Lab making use of techniques like AFM, FTIR, TGA, GC-MS, DSC and SEM-EDX.
